Peptide Research Glossary
Understand common terms used in laboratory documentation, analytical testing, peptide research, and evidence review.
Amino acid
An organic molecule that can serve as a building block of peptides and proteins.
Assay
A defined analytical procedure used to measure or evaluate a property of a sample.
Certificate of Analysis
A document reporting specified test information and results for an identified sample or lot.
Chromatography
A family of methods that separate sample components based on how they interact with a mobile phase and a stationary phase.
Cold chain
A documented system for maintaining specified temperature conditions during storage and transport.
HPLC
High-performance liquid chromatography, an analytical separation method often used to examine sample composition.
In-vitro
Research performed outside a living organism, such as in a controlled laboratory vessel or cell system.
In-vivo
Research performed within a living organism.
Lyophilization
A controlled freeze-drying process that removes water from frozen material under reduced pressure.
Mass spectrometry
An analytical technique that measures mass-to-charge information from ionized molecules or fragments.
Molecular weight
A value describing molecular mass based on the atoms that make up a molecule.
Peptide
A chain of amino acids connected by peptide bonds.
Preclinical
Laboratory or animal research conducted before or outside established human clinical evaluation.
Purity
The relative amount of a primary component measured under a stated analytical method and set of conditions.
Reference standard
A characterized material used as a comparison in an analytical procedure.
Sequence
The ordered arrangement of amino acids in a peptide or protein.
Stability
The extent to which a material maintains specified characteristics under defined conditions over time.
Sterility
The absence of viable microorganisms as evaluated through an appropriate validated framework; appearance or purity testing does not establish sterility.
Third-party testing
Testing performed by an organization separate from the seller or manufacturer; the underlying method, report, and chain of custody still require review.
